Detoxifying in spring is an important part of the ayurvedic seasonal routine, called Ritucharya. Spring is the Kapha season, because the wet and cool weather reflects the moist, cool, heavy qualities of Kapha dosha that predominate during this time of the year (March-June).

Spring cleaning: According to Ayurveda, spring is the best season for detoxification, because nature is already trying to clear out the toxins. It’s the time to help the body to efficiently detoxify the channels and the dhatus [body tissues].

Spring Cleaning Tip: This is a great time to open the body’s channels so spring cleaning can take place. Sip hot water throughout the day to help the channels of the body open, thus allowing the physiology to start its natural detoxification. Ayurveda recommends that you drink approximately one thermos of hot water per day. Drink it while its hot!

Robert and Maurita Elias can be choosy in their hiring. The owners of the Woodhouse Day Spa pride themselves on catering to their customers’ every need. So when there is an opening for the front-desk staff, they want to make sure they hire the right person for the job, even though the position lacks a true job description.

Robert and Maurita Elias had prior experience with a franchise. . ‘We decided it was time for us to do something different,’ said Robert Elias.

It’s a bit receptionist, scheduler and greeter.

“It is whatever the job needs,” Robert Elias said he tells potential employees. “Your job is to make sure they leave with their outcomes achieved.”

What sounds like a corporate slogan is really a commitment to customer service that has earned the Eliases national recognition.

The husband and wife can take some credit for the award. They got aboard early as franchise owners and partners in the business with Woodhouse founder Jeni Garrett. She opened the first Woodhouse Day Spa in Victoria, Texas, in 2001.

Laura Flanagan, director of franchisee relations for Woodhouse, said the Eliases participate actively in the company and described them as extremely valuable to the operation. “They were our first franchise location,” she said.

The Eliases brought the Woodhouse name east in November 2003, the same year they met Garrett at a franchise show in Washington, D.C.

“We hit it off with her,” Robert Elias, 50, explained.

The Eliases, Garrett and her husband, Derrick, became partners in the privately held business with the aim of expanding. Each partner brought a different set of skills to the table – Robert Elias, a practicing attorney with Lenahan & Dempsey; Maurita, retail and marketing experience from operating Party City franchises; Derrick Garrett, an anesthesiologist; and Jeni Garrett, an entrepreneur. They’ve set a goal of 100 spas nationwide by 2012, and there’s a possibility the company one day could become publicly owned. The company’s financial data is confidential.

“We decided it was time for us to do something different,” Robert Elias said of the switch to opening the day spa.

What better way to educate people about personal health and wellness than through the spa, added 47-year-old Maurita Elias. The enterprise is more than making money, it’s also about “making a difference in lives,” she said.

Elias and her husband, both Wilkes-Barre area natives, restored a three-story, Tudor-style house built in 1911 on Wyoming Avenue. The uppermost floor houses their offices, with the lower floors sectioned into various rooms where the staff of 24 performs manicures and pedicures, massages and provides other skin and body treatments. The spa, like the 23 other across the country bearing the Woodhouse name and the six soon to open, adheres to a set of principles that ensure consistency of treatment and experience with each visit.

What they saw and heard from Garrett in Texas attracted the Eliases to become franchise owners and allayed their fears of failure.

“If we do it the same way, it will work here, and it has,” said Robert Elias.

Not all of the spas locations are in properties like those in Kingston or Victoria. Many are in lifestyle centers, said Robert Elias. The spas range between 3,500 and 7,000 square feet.

The men and women who pass through the doors enter a haven where the sights, sounds and smells transport them far away from the daily grind. “They’re not just customers to us, they’re guests in our house,” Maurita Elias said.

Inside they can choose to undergo a detoxifying seaweed wrap at $85 for an hour and 15 minutes, a volcanic stone massage at $80 for an hour, or go for the full treatment at a cost of $385 for six hours and 15 minutes. The time element distinguishes the Woodhouse from destination spas that offer longer getaways.

The spa will likely be the only Woodhouse franchise locally and the couple intend to focus on its operation and the future of the company. Without disclosing specific numbers, Maurita Elias said business has been increasing every year at the Kingston franchise and that she and her husband are very happy with the spa’s performance. “This is where we want to be,” she said.

I felt very much like the butter inside a hot iron skillet.

All the knots and aches in my muscles instantly turned into goo as the massage therapist rubbed smooth warm stones all over my body. After 80 minutes, I felt relaxed, transformed, blissed out.

I could have been a million miles from home.

In reality, I was just a quick drive away at Morongo Casino and Resort.

I was initially skeptical when my girlfriends planned a short spa vacation in Cabazon.

It can’t truly be a getaway if we’re just down the highway, I thought.

And how relaxing could a casino spa really be? I pictured it as slot machines clanging right next to the massage table.

But I was so wrong.

Sage Spa at Morongo is one of the nicer spas I’ve ever visited. It’s not opulent enough to intimidate, but it’s not too casual either.

The facility is small, but it’s chic and quiet and pampering, which is everything a spa should be. It’s a good opportunity to turn your phone off, step away from the computer and focus on yourself.

There’s been a trend lately with spa treatments going beyond relaxation, leaning more toward overall wellness. That’s certainly what Sage is doing too, offering a number of detoxifying and anti-aging therapies. (Recommended: The Desert Heat Therapy Cocoon or the Algae Oasis Detox Wrap.)

But the very best thing about the spa at Morongo? It’s far enough that you can feel like you’ve been completely away from it all, without actually leaving

Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa is all that its name encompasses, just three miles from Santa Fe’s historic plaza.

The bishop of Bishop’s Lodge was Jean-Baptiste Lamy, the first archbishop of Santa Fe, who built the little chapel on the hill, which is still open for visits and weddings. (Lamy was immortalized in Willa Cather’s Death Comes to the Archbishop.)

Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa

Bishop’s Lodge spa resort in Santa Fe offers a kid-friendly stable of horses for mountain trail rides.

The bishop built the Central Lodge as a carriage house in 1915. Shortly thereafter, the Pulitzer family bought the property and built the North and South lodges. They sold it to another family, and the East Lodge was built in the 1920s – and so on.

Today, Bishop’s Lodge has 111 rooms and suites in 15 adobe lodges scattered over 450 wooded acres at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

But your kids don’t really care about all that because Bishop’s Lodge also has a swimming pool, and isn’t that what really matters? Kids can put up with all kinds of shopping and gallery hopping if they know that later in the day they will be able to hurl themselves into a pool.

Also kid-friendly: a stable full of trail-hardy horses and properly laconic wranglers for mountain trail rides. Kids must be 8 or older for trail rides, but the stable also offers daily rides in the ring for younger children. Camp Appaloosa for ages 5 through 11 offers activities all day every day and some evenings.

Men’s and teens’ facials are on the menu at the ShaNah Spa, which also offers daily yoga, Pilates, meditation and tai chi classes in a pleasant studio by the pool that is reserved for laps every morning and evening.

Bishop’s Lodge is centrally located for Santa Fe’s world-class restaurants, but the resort’s Las Fuentes Restaurant & Bar can provide a pleasant night in. And breakfast al fresco is an appealing option.

Doubles from about $219; massage, $120; horseback rides, $55 per person. Contact: 1-800-419-0492;

There is a Spa trend  to only do natural nails  and eliminate the artificial nails.  This is being done due to the offensive smell of some nail products.  Other  spas are  trying to cover up the smell from polishes by using aromatherapy.

At Serenity Day Spa and Salon a spa in Martinsburg, W.V.A. they do massage, facials, body wraps, and only do natural nails.

Ever worry where that stylist’s hair brush or nail file has been? Here’s how to avoid common salon mishaps and germs.

By definition, getting pampered shouldn’t be painful. But if you’re heading to the salon, you don’t want your indulgent treatment to come with anything extra, like an infection. Millions of people visit manicurists each year, and every so often they end up with untrained beauty technicians or inadequately cleaned facilities that leave them with more than they bargained for. And according to a study published in the Annals of Occupational Hygiene, a salon that’s poorly maintained can also lead to other problems, like respiratory and neurological conditions from breathing in the fumes of polishes, disinfectants and other chemical-laden products.

The chances are slim that you’ll pick up any problems along with your pedicure. But even if a salon boasts stylish surroundings, sophisticated services and steep prices, that doesn’t mean it’s free from health hazards. “It’s like trusting a chef in a restaurant: everything can look nice—until you end up sick,” says Eric Schwartz, chief operating officer of the nail product distributor OPI Inc. Here are some tips to make sure you leave the salon feeling as great as you look:

1. Licensed to File Check the salon’s and you technician’s certification. Just because a salon is open and everyone seems to be having a good time doesn’t make it legitimate. Licensing boards in every state require that salons post inspection reports and that practicing cosmetologists conspicuously display the stylist or manicurist’s certification at every workstation. If there’s nothing official on the wall, ask why. Before you book that appointment you can also check with your local Better Business Bureau to see whether customers have filed complaints, and look up customer reviews of the salon online on local city guides.

2. The Third Degree Don’t be afraid to inquire how your salon cleans its tools. Are they sitting out uncovered? Are hair combs covered in dust? It takes up to 10 minutes for tools to be properly sanitized, not just a quick spritz from a sanitizing spray, according to the Professional Beauty Association. It’s up to you to make sure they’re doing it right, and “any reputable salon will be more than happy to walk you through the process,” says Melody Umbs, PBA Salon Section member and owner of NNI Nail Salon in Milwaukee, Wis. Ask not only whether the salon disinfects each workstation but what chemicals are used in the cleaning process. (Umbs recommends only brand-name sterilizers approved by the EPA.)

3. Stubble? No Trouble Shave after, not before, getting a pedicure. While some bacteria residue can irritate your skin or cause a surface infection, infectious particles getting inside you can be much more dangerous. Recently shaved legs have small cuts or pore openings that can give infectious diseases an entrance to your bloodstream. There’s no shame in flaunting some leg whiskers.

4. Rub a Tub Tub When getting a pedicure, make sure the foot bath is cleaned—and cleaned well—between customers. If a nail technician doesn’t ask you to wash your hands and feet before your procedure, odds are she didn’t ask the person before you either. And that’s how the nasty stuff spreads. A few years ago researchers from the California Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control swabbed 30 foot baths in salons around California after an outbreak of leg scarring. Even though most businesses disinfected equipment properly, the researchers found bacteria that could cause boils and rashes in 29 of them (97 percent!).

5. Take Your Own Tools Most salons have good records of cleanliness, says cosmetology consultant Doug Schoon, but there are some tools that can’t be sanitized, like emery boards, cardboard nail buffers and the foam cubes used to spread your toes. Just in case your technician doesn’t swap out the old ones after each client (which is required by law), pick up some disposables at the drugstore before your next appointment. Yes, it’s what you’re already paying for, but peace of mind is priceless. (Also, experts recommend that you don’t let the pedicurist use a razor or any tool with a blade on your feet. Their use in salons is prohibited in some states.)
